Man who performed handstand on 100-metre high bridge branded ‘reckless’

A man who performed a handstand on the top of a 100-metre high bridge over the main Belfast to Derry road has been branded ‘reckless’.

Footage has emerged of the man scaling the landmark bridge near Toome, Co Antrim, in recent weeks.

The structure, which is almost 100 metres high, spans the River Bann and is used by thousands of cars and other vehicles on the main Belfast to Derry route every day.

A clip posted on a social media page managed by someone calling themselves Odhran White – Animal Body, shows the bridge being scaled before a man pulls a handstand at its highest point.

The short clip also shows the man dangling his legs over the side of one of the bridge’s two arches as cars and other traffic passes underneath.

It is believed the well-known bridge, which opened in 2004, has been climbed in the past.

One comment posted in response to the social media footage contained the boast “climbed it 21 years ago”, while in 2016 pictures emerged of two people climbing opposite sides of the bridge.

Mid Ulster SDLP assembly member Patsy McGlone said the actions of the climber could have placed people at risk.

“This is extremely dangerous,” he said.

“Any gusts of wind or slippery surface could have endangered not only his own life but that of others passing by.

“To others thinking it might be safe to indulge in such recklessness my message is – do not and stay clear.”

The Department for Infrastructure was contacted.
