Metro Vancouver weather: Rainfall warning for most of coastal B.C.​on March 22, 2025 at 7:04 pm

Keep your rain gear handy: Heavy rain is barrelling towards Metro Vancouver, with up to 110 millilitres of rain set to kick off the second week of spring break.

Environment Canada updated a rainfall warning for the region early Sunday, saying 70 to 120 mm of rain is expected to fall in coastal B.C. from now until Monday.

The warning is in effect for Metro Vancouver’s northern sections, the Fraser Valley including Abbotsford, Howe Sound and the Sunshine Coast.

“A prolonged period of heavy rain and rising freezing levels will continue (Sunday),” read the warning, noting the heaviest rain is expected Sunday before tapering off Monday afternoon. Heavy rain will continue into Monday morning further east toward Abbotsford, said the weather agency.

“Freezing levels will continue to rise (Sunday) and stay significantly elevated into the first half of this week.” Temperatures will warm up to double-digit highs. At Vancouver International Airport, for example, temperatures are expected to climb to 15 C by Wednesday.

Total rainfall will vary by location. The heaviest soaking is expected in the coastal mountains from the North Shore to Coquitlam, where 80 to 120 mm are expected. Other areas will range from 70 to 100 mm.

Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible in low-lying areas.

The rainfall warning also covers the Sunshine Coast and the southwestern portion of Vancouver Island, including Port Renfrew, which could get up to 130 mm. Further north, Tofino could get about 90 mm of rain.
