EXCLUSIVE: A week after Jay Sures’ home was vandalized by pro-Palestinian protesters, a plethora of Hollywood power players are offering the UTA Vice-Chairman and UC Regent their support against the “hateful incident.”
Spotlighting a “disturbing and reprehensible act of vandalism and intimidation carried out” on the agent’s Brentwood residence on February 5 by a masked group, the open letter from the Jewish Federation Los Angeles calls on university officials and civil leaders to “unequivocally condemn the protesters’ unlawful and antisemitic actions and reaffirm their commitment to protecting the safety and dignity of all individuals and groups, including the Jewish community.”
Oscar winner Michael Douglas, Big Bang Theory alum Mayim Bialik, producer Greg Berlanti, Jennifer Jason Leigh and WBTV boss Channing Dungey are among the around 500 signatories on the JFEDLA correspondence. As you can see below, others among the agents, producers, lawyers, university regents and more than a few UTA clients include HBO’s Francesca Orsi, Howard Gordon, Jason Blum, Robert and Michelle King, Steve Levitan, Whitney Cummings, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach, FX CEO John Landgraf, WME’s Rick Rosen and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.
Watch on Deadline
“Sures has been a steadfast advocate, outspoken in his commitment to protecting Jewish students and ensuring that UC remains a safe and inclusive space for all,” the six-paragraph letter asserts. “He has used his platform to combat antisemitism and push back against false narratives about Israel. This attack is an attempt to silence those who stand against hate. We will never tolerate the suppression of free speech through intimidation.”
Regardless of your position on the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel and the war in Gaza, the word “intimidation” is essential here.
Calling on UCLA to divest from Israel, about 70 masked protesters showed up at Sures’ home at about 6 a.m. last week. Banging on drums and chanting to deliberately disturb the up-market neighborhood, the group covered the front area of the house in tape and trespassed onto the property to smear the garage door with fake bloody hands and flyers advocating for their cause. Unfurling a banner that read “Jonathan Sures you will pay, until you see your final day,” the protesters chanted “intifada revolution” over and over.
As we reported on February 6, LAPD units arrived soon afterwards, with backup called and UCLA PD also on the scene to “keep the peace,” as one police officer told Deadline at the time. The protesters left within an hour after commencing their actions, which Sures himself called “intimidation.”
Sures presumed he had been targeted directly at his home because of a Sures-backed ban on political statements from university homepages that the UC Regents voted in late last year. After the incident at Sures’ home, UCLA put out a statement that said in part: “The University strongly supports freedom of speech and the rights of our community members to participate in nonviolent protests, and we condemn all crimes and harassment committed against members of our UC community.”
No arrests were made last week, but the ongoing investigation by law enforcement is seeking to determine the identity of the masked protesters and whether charges will be laid.
Read the full letter of support for Sures from the JFEDLA and Hollywood notables here:
A Letter in Solidarity with UC Regent Jonathan “Jay” Sures
We, the undersigned members of the Los Angeles community — comprised of entertainment, civic, and nonprofit leaders — write to express our unequivocal support for UC Regent and UTA Vice Chairman Jonathan (Jay) Sures, the target of a disturbing and reprehensible act of vandalism and intimidation carried out at his home on February 5th.
A group of about 75 masked protesters calling for divestment, organized by the UCLA chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine and Graduate Students for Justice in Palestine, held signs threatening the Sures family and blocked their driveway. The same mob of people terrifyingly surrounded his wife’s car, restricting her movement. By the end of the protest, his property was trespassed and defaced with bloody handprints left on his garage door.
The UC system has a clear and consistent policy against calls for boycott and divestment from Israel. Yet, the protesters singled out Sures, one of 18 UC Regents, around these divestment-related policies, with one sign threatening “divest now, or you will pay.”
Sures has been a steadfast advocate, outspoken in his commitment to protecting Jewish students and ensuring that UC remains a safe and inclusive space for all. He has used his platform to combat antisemitism and push back against false narratives about Israel. This attack is an attempt to silence those who stand against hate. We will never tolerate the suppression of free speech through intimidation.
We call upon law enforcement and university officials to fully investigate this hateful incident and ensure that all those responsible are held accountable. Furthermore, we urge local elected officials and university leadership to unequivocally condemn the protesters’ unlawful and antisemitic actions and reaffirm their commitment to protecting the safety and dignity of all individuals and groups, including the Jewish community.
Jay Sures stood up and spoke out with courage. Now, we stand with him.
