MORE than four million people will receive an emergency alert tonight after a major weather warning.
The alert set for 6pm comes after the Met Office issued a red danger to life warning in response to Storm Eowyn.
It will be sent to 4.5 million people across Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland.
The sound will last and vibrate for around ten seconds ahead of winds reaching 100mph in some areas.
Mobile phones will make a siren-like sound even if their device is on silent when the alert is issued.
The red warning will last from 10am to 5pm on Friday with dangerous conditions to driving and all travel expected.
Scotrail has already said all trains will be cancelled on Friday.
A Cabinet Office spokesperson said: “The Met Office has issued a red warning for wind on Friday January 24, meaning there is a danger to life across Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland.
“In light of the deteriorating weather conditions and associated disruption, and in consultation with the Scottish Government and Northern Ireland Executive, the Cabinet Office will issue emergency alerts early this evening to people affected by the warnings in Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland.
“The emergency alert system will send a message to every compatible mobile phone in the areas at most risk, containing information about the weather warnings and guidance on how to stay safe.”
