Prepare for delays in Seattle as an MLK Day march kicks off at Garfield High School at 12:30 p.m. in the Central District.
Seattle-area drivers should prepare for traffic Monday in and around the Central District, as a result of a scheduled Martin Luther King Jr. Day march that is set to take off from Garfield High School at 12:30 p.m.
Organized annually by the Seattle Martin Luther King Jr. Organizing Coalition, this year’s march is focused on drawing attention to policies of the incoming presidential administration.
Previous marches have drawn between 3,500 and 10,000 participants, though organizers anticipate higher-than-normal turnout as MLK Day and Inauguration Day fall on the same day this year.
Premarch programming at Garfield will also include a job fair, workshops and a rally. The march will begin in the school parking lot, though organizers have not yet shared the full route, citing safety concerns.
In the past, marchers have trekked 2 miles from Garfield to the Jackson Federal Building on Second Avenue in downtown Seattle.
