The new Leaf briefly interacted with Berube in his rookie year when the latter was head coach of the Flyers, while a cast of his bench bosses afterwards concluded with John Tortorella the past three seasons prior to the trade of Laughton earlier this month.

While noting with some humour that Berube runs shorter practices, Laughton describes them as “pretty similar’. Berube saves most of his vitriol for practice when he senses his team is dozing, but is a man of few words among media. ‘Torts’ can be terse, with some technicolour quotes and is a passionate speaker when trying to deliver some tough love, though he has toned it down in public in recent years.

“Torts gets a bad rap in the media,” Laughton claimed. “He’s a players’ coach, you can go in and talk to him at any time. Chief has been very good in conversations with me, too. He lets me know where I stand and what he wants from me.

“That’s the biggest thing as a player, and both guys do a great job.”

Both coaches have won a Stanley Cup, Tortorella with the 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning, Berube leading the 2019 St. Louis Blues.
