Fire crews fought freezing conditions as they extinguished a blaze that resulted in the evacuation of roughly 100 employees from an industrial business in southeast Calgary on Wednesday morning.

Calgary Fire Department crews were dispatched at 7:50 a.m. to the 6300 block of 10th Street S.E., an industrial site near the intersection of Deerfoot and Glenmore Trails, after reports of smoke and flames inside the building.

Due to heavy smoke and low visibility, a CFD news release said the fire was escalated to a second alarm at 8:25 a.m., in order to bring in more resources. At 9:20 a.m., a third alarm was activated to rotate out firefighters and apparatus, due to the extreme cold conditions, “without disrupting firefighting operations.”

Approximately 100 employees safely evacuated the building. According to CFD’s release, one individual was assessed by EMS for minor injuries, including singed hair, but did not require transport to hospital.

The fire was declared under control at 10:20 a.m. Crews conducted searches of the building and confirmed no one remained inside. Afterward, a large industrial fan was used to clear lingering smoke.

Utilities to the building have been shut off and hazardous materials teams remain on scene to assess and manage any potential chemical hazards, the release said. As of 11:00 a.m., CFD apparatus remained on scene to search for hotspots and continue ventilation.

Fire investigators are also on-site to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
