Two Ontario men are facing charges for allegedly scamming a University of Calgary student with an offer to buy a discounted projector.

The victim reported the incident to campus security on March 25 after the two men, who claimed to be installing projectors at the university, offered to sell him an overstock projector at a discounted rate.

The accused pair took payment from the student, after driving him to a bank, but left without handing over the projector.

A Calgary police investigation was launched after U of C security found the suspects attempting to engage another group of students with a similar offer.

The two accused, Yousef Hilal, 24, of Mississauga, and Arpit Rasela, 28, of Georgetown, were located in the northwest Calgary community of Collingwood on March 27. Both men were arrested and charged with fraud under $5,000 and proceeds of crime over $5,000.

Upon their arrest, police seized several projectors, screens and $9,000 in cash.

Investigators believe the two men had been conducting the scam at multiple post-secondary institutions across Canada. They’re to appear in court on April 23.
