O’Rourke sisters fall short in World Boxing Championship finals

AOIFE and Lisa O’Rourke had to settle for silver at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships on Sunday in Serbia.

The Irish pair both suffered defeats in their respective finals, ending an impressive campaign on a disappointing note.

Four-time European gold medallist Aoife was outpointed by Russian opponent Anastasiia Shamonova in the 75kg final.

The judges had her trailing on three scorecards, while the other two had it level after two rounds.

However, Shamonova dominated the final round to secure victory.

Lisa, the 2022 world light-middleweight champion, also fell short against Russia’s Elena Gapeshina in the 70kg final.

She was unanimously outpointed, with all five judges awarding each round to her opponent.

Despite the losses, the Roscommon duo made history as the first siblings to reach a World Championship final in the same tournament.

Lisa adds a world silver to her collection, having claimed gold in 2022, while Aoife secures her maiden World Championship silver medal.
