Ottawa is set to have less representation in Mark Carney’s pared down cabinet.

Ottawa MP Jenna Sudds has been shuffled out of cabinet.

The removal of Sudds, who was minister of families, children and social development, came Friday morning as new Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled a leaner cabinet with nearly half the number of ministers.

Part of that cabinet-cutting involves Gatineau MP and Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon absorbing Sudds’ previous portfolio as he becomes minister of jobs and families.

The changes mark Carney’s intention to reduce and simplify his cabinet heading into a likely election. Under Justin Trudeau, the number of ministers totalled 37; now, the cabinet has been reduced to 23.

“We’re very focused on action,” Carney told reporters as he walked into Rideau Hall to be sworn in.

Ottawa MP David McGuinty will remain public safety minister, but will also take over the emergency preparedness portfolio, as Harjit Sajjan has said he will not seek re-election. Ginette Petitpas Taylor, head of the Treasury Board, will keep her role in Carney’s cabinet.

More to come.
