Two unrelated Canadian women, both in their 60s and both with the same surname, were killed in separate motor vehicle collisions four weeks apart in Jamaica recently.

As reported by local media, 60-year-old Kelly Stewart, reportedly from “Dean Crescent” in Ontario, died on Feb. 16, while 65-year-old Janice Stewart, whose home in Canada was not identified, passed after a crash on March 15.

Both fatalities have been confirmed by Global Affairs Canada. The agency told National Post consular officials are working in concert with local authorities, but it’s unable to discuss further due to privacy considerations.

In the first incident, the Jamaica Observer reported that Kelly was one of three passengers in a Toyota Rav 4 driven by her husband when it collided with a truck on the North Coast Highway in Trelawny Parish at night.

All four were taken to hospital where Kelly was pronounced dead and the others, none of whom were named in media reports, were admitted for undisclosed injuries. The Observer reported days later that her husband’s condition had improved.

The Jamaica Gleaner identified Kelly’s co-occupants as her family and noted the accident happened 30 minutes into their ride and not long after landing at nearby Sangster International Airport.

In the more recent incident, Janice Stewart was riding a scooter driven by her husband in the St. Elizabeth Parish community of Treasure Beach when their motorbike collided with a vehicle, as reported by Loop Jamaica.

The police report says the northbound bike failed to keep left and drove into the vehicle’s path.

Both were taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her husband’s identity and condition are not immediately known.

A local hotelier who spoke to the Observer said the couple had been visiting “the area for the past 20 years.”

The National Post has contacted the Jamaica Constabulary Force for more information about the fatal collisions.
