Bik McFarlane has been hailed by Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald as “a great patriot”, but was involved in the murder of a young trainee garda and an Army private, as well as the attempted murder of several others during the rescue of kidnap victim Don Tidey near Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, in 1983.
