A 73-year-old woman suffered serious injuries after being struck by a car in Killarney on Friday afternoon.

The woman — who was later reported to be in critical condition — was hit by a Kia Soul around 1:35 p.m. while crossing the road at the intersection of 26th Avenue and 34th Street S.W.

Laura Laanstra, the manager of Mission Thrift Store on 26th Avenue S.W., told Postmedia the injured woman — a volunteer at her store named Sandy — was injured while walking to a nearby bus stop.

“Sandy is one of our most dedicated volunteers — she comes at least three or four times a week,” Laanstra said, adding she and the rest of the store’s staff were celebrating Sandy’s 73rd birthday on Friday.

After hearing from a customer that Sandy had been struck by a car, Laanstra said she rushed to the woman and held her hand until first responders arrived.

“There maybe needs to be some better flashing pedestrian things, because this (intersection) has nothing,” Laanstra said.

The driver, a 66-year-old woman, remained at the scene. She was not injured, said police.

It’s believed the driver didn’t notice the pedestrian crossing in front of her vehicle, said police, adding driver inattention is being investigated as a factor in the collision.
