A freight train hit and killed a man walking near Seattle’s downtown waterfront Tuesday morning.

The collision occurred at Broad Street and Alaskan Way, Seattle Fire Department posted on X at 10:05 a.m. The department shortly after said the pedestrian was dead.

Seattle Police determined that the man was walking westbound on Broad Street toward the waterfront and waited as a southbound train operated by BNSF Railway went by. Police said it appeared he walked across the tracks unaware that another train headed north was coming.

The train engineer told officers he was traveling 15 miles per hour and was 2 miles from his final destination. Police did not conduct a criminal investigation, the department said on its blog post.
