While many people around the world are muttering not-so-nice things about Trump these days, Maher leaned the other way following a meeting with him last week.
The talk show host and comedian credited the president as being “one of the most effective politicians” days after their dinner at the White House, which also included UFC head Dana White and country-rock singer Kid Rock.
“Trump is one of the most effective politicians,” Maher said on Sunday’s episode of his Club Random podcast.
He noted to his guest, former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, “Whatever you think of the policy and him as a person.
Maher continued: “Just as a politician, just understand that [you should] always lean in to being more who you are. The people are not savvy about issues but they smell a phony a mile away and that kind of s***, nobody else does it.”

The Real Time With Bill Maher host has been roasting Trump since he entered politics, but has changed his tune — publicly, at least — since the private dinner.
Maher has long disagreed with Trump on most issues, though in recent times, he has attacked “woke” liberalism and cancel culture just as sternly slammed MAGA politics.
But on Sunday, he applauded Trump’s political prowess compared to that of the Democrats.
“You know, he has those moments that no other politician has. And the Democrats have to find that guy,” Maher explained.

“But let’s be real — they’ve been searching for years, and they’re still coming up empty.”
Maher acknowledged Trump’s relatability when it comes to the American public.
“This guy just voices his interior monologue,” Maher said. “And voters eat it up.”
He also noted how Trump’s authenticity and dominance appeared to matter more than facts or policy, which Trump has largely managed to shrug off.

“He is daddy,” Maher said jokingly. “People want a daddy. And Democrats keep putting up Tims.”
He added: “He has that thing. And no one else has it.”
Kid Rock told Sean Hannity last week that Maher seemed nervous about his first visit to the White House, but teased that as far as the conversation went, they “basically stuck to things that we agreed on.”
The singer commented of both Trump and Maher: “They both have extremely deep knowledge of American history, both very smart guys, and you know, very reasonable people, even though they’ve had this pretty harsh relationship. It was cool.”
