A 15-year-old boy was arrested Thursday after he allegedly made threats against a Broward County high school, authorities said.
According to Pembroke Pines police, Lucas Gonzalez is a 10th-grade student at South Broward High School in Hollywood and made a threat on Snapchat to “shoot up” Charles W. Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines.
Police said the teen was participating in a group conversation with other students on the social media platform when he made the threat.
One of the students then called 911.
According to police, officers quickly identified the suspect and arrested him at his home.
Gonzalez faces a felony charge of electronic threats to kill and is being held at the Juvenile Assessment Center.
He appeared in court Friday morning with his parents, where his defense attorney told the judge that there were mitigating factors that should be considered, including that Gonzalez has no criminal record and is a good kid.
The state, however, said given the climate we live in, these types of threats need to be taken seriously.
The judge ultimately ordered that Gonzalez undergo a psychological evaluation and a threat assessment before he can go home under strict conditions.
“Though the threat was isolated, a safety plan was created with administrators from Flanagan High School to increase security and provide additional patrol units on campus during January 30, 2025,” a news release from the police department stated. “The campus remains safe and secure. Our department is once again asking parents to please speak to their children about the seriousness of making school threats. The Pembroke Pines Police Department will utilize every resource available to fully investigate these threats, and those responsible will be arrested.”
