Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a young girl was bitten by an on-duty Calgary Police Service dog Wednesday afternoon.

Calgary police said officers were responding to reports of a stolen vehicle in progress shortly before 3 p.m. in the southeast community of Erin Woods when the incident occurred.

While searching for the suspect, the dog bit the girl, who was in a field being searched at the time, CPS said in a release.

The girl was transported to Alberta Children’s Hospital with minor injuries.

“Due to the traumatic nature of this incident, the CPS is providing support to the child and her family and will fully cooperate with the (Alberta Serious Incident Response Team) investigation,” the release states.

Police were reportedly looking for two suspects after a stolen SUV was abandoned near Erin Meadow Green S.E.

It’s believed the driver of the stolen vehicle was eventually arrested, although no information was included in the release.
