Police are investigating after a box truck stuck an overpass in Langley early Wednesday.

According to Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with the B.C. Highway Patrol, a call contacted police just before 8 a.m. to report seeing a westbound box truck strike the CP Rail overpass on Highway 1, just west of 232 Street in Langley.

McLaughlin said the driver was not found at the scene of the overpass strike but that the driver has since been identified and police have been in contact.

“The damage to the overpass appears to be minor. It is hard to distinguish today’s damage from multiple past overpass strikes at this same location,” said McLaughlin.

“Police would like to remind drivers that they have a legal obligation to stop for any collision that might have caused damage.”

Police and commercial vehicle safety enforcement officers are now investigating, speaking with witnesses and reviewing available video footage to determine the events leading up to the strike, and any enforcement actions necessary.

McLaughlin said there was no additional congestion beyond what is typically expected of morning rush hour on that route.

The province had previously introduced harsher penalties for commercial truck drivers who hit overpasses and bridges, with fines of up to $100,000 and possible jail time up to 18 months.
