Police have shot dead a man who had earlier allegedly driven off in a stolen vehicle before an armed confrontation with officers at the Gold Coast.

A police media spokesperson confirmed the man was seen in Calvary Court in Labrador and brandished a firearm at police before leaving in a stolen vehicle.

The driver came to a stop on Brisbane Road in Arundel about 9.30am and a second confrontation took place between the man and police.

Officers fired at the driver and although police and paramedics rendered medical assistance, he died at the scene.

Police remained at the incident site.
