A new Angus Reid poll says most provincial leaders are seeing their approval ratings rise amid the Canada-U.S. trade war with Ontario Premier Doug Ford seeing his highest approval in four years.

Ford, sitting in the low 30s for nearly two years, is now approved of by almost half (48%) in Ontario after his trade negotiations with the U.S. has some dubbing him “Captain Canada.”

On the heels of a historic renegotiation of the Churchill Falls power agreement with Quebec, outgoing Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey’s approval rose 22 points to make him the most approved-of premier in the country at 68%.

And despite criticism of a new bill to give his B.C. NDP government emergency powers to respond to U.S. tariffs, Premier David Eby also sees his approval rise by seven points to 53%.

Among the premiers whose approval rating is unchanged from December is Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who has also taken a lead role in the U.S.-Canada trade war, with an approval of 46% unchanged from two years ago. In Quebec, approval of Premier François Legault is also unchanged from three months ago at 38%.

One reason for these premiers not benefiting might be domestic scandals in health care for Smith, and the auto insurance corporation’s online platform costs overruns for Legault.

The Angus Reid Institute conducted an online survey from Mar. 13-16, 2025 among 4,009 Canadian adults. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
