Calgarians have until Sunday to donate books for RESET’s 21st annual book sale, which raises funds supporting women exiting sexual exploitation.

The RESET Society of Calgary is accepting donations at Crossroads Market in southeast Calgary from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Collected books will be sold over two weekends, May 1 to 4 and May 9 to 11.

Proceeds from the sale account for more than 10 per cent of the organization’s annual revenue to support recovery programs for women survivors of trafficking.

“People don’t really know that it’s happening in Calgary, but it really is,” said Theresa Jenkins, executive director of RESET Society of Calgary. “We help women and their children.”

The funds directly support their one-year transition program where survivors are provided with food, clothing and a safe shelter to stay and get the medical attention they need.

Some survivors are experiencing addiction, according to Jenkins. The organization provides doctors to help them with the detox process.

Graduates of the one-year program may return to school with scholarship support or enter the workforce with job placement assistance.

The organization hopes to raise at least $160,000 through this year’s sale.

They accept any type of book except encyclopedias, textbooks and magazines. CDs and DVDs are also welcome.

As of today, they have collected a total of 75,000 books, according to Judy Baldwyn, project lead of RESET Society of Calgary.

The collection process and the book sale itself are both volunteer-run. The organization has a total of 200 volunteers this year.

“We’re always happy to help,” said Darlene Nemeth and Cindy Hauge, volunteers for over 10 years.

“There’s a camaraderie and companionship for us, and it’s also a worthwhile cause that we all believe in,” said Hauge.

Both volunteers look forward to the book sale every year. They bring back the books they read from last year, and look forward to getting more books.

“It’s that human connection for us as volunteers and that opportunity to make friends where you have this incredible common interest,” said Nemeth. “But at the very same time, you’re doing good for the world, which is always something all humans really want to do.”

Admission is $2, with books priced at a flat rate of $2 for children’s books and $4 for soft and hardcover books.
