Rory McIlroy’s sports psychologist offers to help Andy Farrell & Ireland get over World Cup hoodoo after Masters heroics

RORY McILROY’S sports psychologist said he “would be glad to talk” to Andy Farrell and the Ireland rugby team to help them over their World Cup hoodoo.

Dr Bob Rotella worked his magic to help McIlroy end his 11-year wait for a major when the 35-year-old won The Masters last Sunday.

His guidance has been instrumental in more than 80 major victories across the men’s and women’s games.

And speaking to the Sunday Independent, Rotella revealed he would be open to speaking with Andy Farrell‘s side.

The Ireland‘s men’s team has never been past a Rugby World Cup quarter-final, exiting the last eight at the hands of New Zealand in 2023.

Dr Rotella said: “I’ve worked with a lot of team sports so I would be glad to talk to them.

“It’s a lot of the same. You better believe in your team more than you believe in any other team.

“If you don’t think you’re going to win, well… then you must believe in the other team… and that doesn’t make any sense.

“You’ve also got to trust your team-mates and do it together.

“Everybody has different roles on the team and you have to really buy in and star in your role.

“You can’t just accept it, you’ve got to do your role better than anyone else has ever done that role. Ever.”

McIlroy fuelled talk of a triumphant reunion in his hometown of Holywood by jetting back into Ireland – where he reunited with his parents.

Proud Rosie and Gerry watched their lad complete the historic career grand slam from their home in Holywood, Co Down, last Sunday.

Rory’s Augusta heroics saw him finally claim the coveted green jacket and a cheque for €3.7million in Georgia, USA.

And following his nail-biting win, the tearful golf star paid an emotional tribute to his folks as he vowed to see them this week.

He said: “I want to say hello to mum and dad back in Northern Ireland. They did [make a lot of sacrifices for me], and I can’t wait to see them next week. I just can’t wait to celebrate this with them.”

Rory travelled home on his €60million private jet from England – after first crossing the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday.

He was seen carrying daughter Poppy, four, down the stairs after touching down in the rain at George Best Belfast City Airport.

The Gulfstream G650 landed at 11.30am, with the golfer picked up by a private car. He then set off on the 36km journey to Holywood to celebrate with his parents.

American wife Erica Stoll, 37, wasn’t pictured but was with him.
McIlroy’s Masters victory — which came after a tense play-off with Justin Rose — clinched him his first major title in 11 years.

And it makes him only the sixth player to have won all four of golf’s major championships.
