Sean Ono Lennon Honors Mother Yoko Ono at Oscars Win

Sunday, March 10, 2024, marked not only the 2024 Oscars but also Mother’s Day in the U.K. During the emotional win for best animated short film, “WAR IS OVER! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko,” Sean Ono Lennon, son of Yoko Ono and Beatles legend John Lennon, made a heartfelt tribute to his mother.

At the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Sean, alongside director Dave Mullins and producer Brad Booker, took the stage to accept the award. Amidst their speeches, Sean took a moment to honor Yoko Ono, who turned 91 in February. Despite the “wrap-it-up” music playing, Sean requested the audience to wish his mother a happy Mother’s Day, and the crowd obliged with a unified response.

Sean, the only child of Ono and Lennon, was born in 1975. Ono also has a daughter, Kyoko Chan Cox, from her previous marriage, while Lennon had a son, Julian Lennon, with his first wife.

The film “WAR IS OVER!,” co-written by Sean and Mullins, is set during World War I, where a carrier pigeon delivers messages between two soldiers engaged in a chess game, unaware they are on opposing sides.

Ono and Lennon collaborated on various projects before Lennon’s tragic death in 1980, including the iconic holiday song “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).” The track continues to resonate, reaching No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022, over 50 years after its release.
