A fisherman who went missing off the coast of Newcastle this afternoon is understood to have been pulled into the water by a great white shark that took his fishing line, according to NSW Police.
It is understood that the man, who was taking part in a statewide fishing competition, was attacked by a shark after entering the water and has gone missing.
The incident, which took place about 50 kilometres offshore about 1pm, prompted an air and sea search involving helicopters, Water Police, Marine Rescue and fishing boats.
Fishermen involved in another fishing competition told Nine News they had come in contact with a shark in the same location last week.
An earlier statement from NSW Police said there had been “no confirmation” of a shark attack.
The search for the man is still under way.
More to come.
