Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium announced Thursday that it had received $10 million from the healthcare company Abbott, a longtime benefactor of the aquarium.
According to the announcement, which called the amount of the donation “transformative,” the money will go towards education, the “protection and preservation of wildlife and wild places” and the Shedd’s ongoing renovations leading up to its centennial in 2030.
The north suburban-based Abbott and the company’s philanthropic Abbott Fund’s previous support was recognized in 2010 with the naming of the aquarium’s marine mammal pavilion the Abbott Oceanarium.
The Shedd Aquarium first opened in 1930 on the lakefront, on what came to be known as the Museum Campus, and is one of the most popular museums in the Chicago area, reporting about 2 million visitors annually. Its operating expenses in 2023 were about $64 million, according to its most recent financial statements as a nonprofit.
