Siena Women’s Lacrosse Sets Program Records in Dominant Win Over Rider

In a record-breaking performance at Hickey Field on Saturday afternoon, the Siena women’s lacrosse team showcased their dominance against MAAC newcomer Rider, securing a historic 22-4 victory. Not even adverse weather conditions could hinder the Saints’ remarkable display, as they set multiple program records en route to their impressive win.

The Saints’ commanding victory established a new program record for the largest margin of victory in the team’s 28-year history, surpassing the previous record of 17 goals. Sarah Irish’s goal in the final seconds of the game extended the lead to 18, solidifying their place in the record books. Additionally, the 22 goals scored by Siena matched the program’s single-game record, previously achieved in a game against Hartford on March 13, 2019.

Siena’s dominance extended across all aspects of the game, particularly in draw controls, where they secured an impressive 26 out of 30 as a team. Senior Taryn Asselin set a new single-game program record for most draw controls with 15, further highlighting the Saints’ dominance in possession.

Despite Rider’s strong start to the season, boasting one of the MAAC’s top players in Katie Walsh, Siena’s defense held firm, limiting Walsh to just two draw controls and one goal. Offensively, junior Grace Dobrzynski led the charge with an eight-point performance, supported by junior Kelly Logue, who surpassed 100 career points with a six-point outing.

Siena’s relentless attack saw them establish a commanding 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, with freshmen Olivia Nicholson and senior Rebecca Gilhooley contributing two goals each. The Saints continued to dominate in the second quarter, outscoring the Broncs 6-2 to enter halftime with a commanding 13-3 lead.

Maintaining their intensity in the second half, Siena outscored Rider 9-1, with contributions from twelve different players. Defensively, graduate student Jenna Colabufo led the charge with four caused turnovers, reaching a milestone of 50 for her Saints’ career.

The victory marked Siena’s fourth consecutive win and their fifth win in the last six outings, showcasing their formidable form as they approach the latter stages of the season. Rider, previously averaging nearly 15 goals per game, was stifled by Siena’s defense, managing just nine shots, with six on target.

Siena’s record-breaking performance serves as a testament to their strength and depth as a team, further solidifying their position as contenders in the MAAC conference.
