A 17-year-old boy faced charges after detectives accused him of fatally shooting a 16-year-old girl in Fort Lauderdale.
Angeletta Thomas-Keel said she was grateful that detectives had arrested Isaiah Frazier, a suspect accused of shooting her granddaughter Tanaejah Atterbury.
“It took our soul from us. She was just beginning to be a teenager,” Thomas-Keel said.
According to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, the 9th-grade student was shot on Feb. 17 along Northwest Eighth Avenue, near 16th Street.
Thomas-Keel said her granddaughter was “at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Witnesses said Tanaejah was among the kids who were standing near a fight involving two teenage girls. She was shot and later died at Broward Health Medical Center, police said.
Casey Liening, a spokeswoman for FLPD, announced Frazier’s arrest on Tuesday. He was arrested on Monday and faced charges of first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder.
“Justice will be done,” Thomas-Keel said.
