Major storm bringing heavy rain to move into SoCal. Here's a timeline

Southern California will see heavy rain as the strongest storm of the season arrives to the region Thursday.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A flash flood watch has been issued as the brunt of a potentially dangerous storm that could drop nearly 5 inches of rain in charred foothills moves into Southern California Thursday.

Storm timeline

There will be periods of moderate to heavy rain Thursday. Light rain will cover much of the region through the morning hours, but the storm will ramp up in the afternoon when a cold front moves in from the north. The Los Angeles area will see the heaviest amount of rain from mid-afternoon to early evening.

A flash flood watch was issued by the National Weather Service for the bulk of L.A. County for Thursday morning through the evening. A flood watch will also be in effect from Thursday morning through the night for most of Orange County.

The steady amounts of rain are heightening concerns of debris and mudflows in recent burn scar areas in Altadena and Pacific Palisades.

The cold front starts leaving the region Thursday night. Showers will linger through Friday as the storm moves out, setting up a dry weekend.

As far as rain totals from this storm, lower elevations could see as much as three inches over the three-day period. Higher terrain areas, such as foothill and mountain communities, could receive as much as 5-6 inches of rain.

Thursday weather

Los Angeles and Orange counties Thursday will see windy conditions, along with a high of around 59 degrees and a low of 51. The storm is expected to drop between 2-3 inches of rain by the end of the day.

The valleys and Inland Empire will see similar temperatures, reaching a high of 58 and a low of 50. Expect between 3-5 inches of rain.

Beaches Thursday can expect gusty winds, with a high of 58 and a low of 49. The storm is expected to drop between 2-3 inches of rain.
