Suspect arrested in Crestwood following hunt that began in Oak Parkon February 14, 2025 at 7:03 pm

A report of a car theft in Oak Park sparked a police chase through the south suburbs early Friday morning, police said.

Oak Park police said at about 1 a.m., a woman reported her vehicle was taken by her daughter’s ex-boyfriend, a 25-year-old man identified as Thomas Kozie.

Police said Kozie was in phone contact with the woman’s daughter and agreed to come back to the home in the 100 block of North Kenilworth to return medication belonging to the woman.

While her daughter was getting the medication from Kozie, he pulled her into the vehicle and drove off east on North Boulevard, police said.

The daughter texted her mother that she was scared and Kozie was not stopping or letting her out of the vehicle, police said.

Police pinged the daughter’s phone and Illinois State Police began a pursuit, police said.

Illinois State Police, with help from the Chicago Police Department, reported the vehicle was found at about 1:48 a.m., with the daughter inside. Kozie, wanted in Iowa for a probation violation, was arrested at 127th Street and Menard in Crestwood, police said.

Kozie was taken to the Oak Park Police Department, police said.

The daughter was taken to her home for an interview, police said. She did want to cooperate with officers, wish to pursue charges or speak with a state’s attorney, police said.

Kozie will be charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and an out-of-state fugitive warrant, police said.
