Suspect shot by Chicago police while leaning out of window in Mount Greenwood, officials say​on January 24, 2025 at 9:56 am

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police shot and injured a suspect Thursday on the South Side.

The man allegedly had a gun and was leaning out of a window before he was shot by police, officials said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability confirmed there was a Chicago police-involved shooting in the 11000 block of South Millard Avenue in Mount Greenwood.

Officers responded to the location around 3:49 p.m. for a call of a person with a gun, CPD said. Chicago police rushed family members out of a home at the scene.

“Upon arrival, officers observed a male individual leaning out of a window,” a statement from CPD read in part. “Officers attempted to de-escalate the individual and provided direction for him to keep his hands visible. During the encounter, an officer discharged his weapon, striking the individual. Officers located the individual on the ground and rendered medical attention.”

The injured person was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, sources said.

The moment the situation escalated could be heard on police scanner radio as shots were fired.

“He’s out of the window! He fell out of the window!” officers can be heard saying on police scanner audio. “Shots fired by the police! He fell from the window.”

A Chicago police officer was taken to Little Company of Mary Medical Center to be checked out for a minor issue, but was not shot, sources said.

It was a busy scene as investigators shut down Millard Avenue and traffic was congested along 111th Street.

Some witnesses told ABC7 there was some sort of disturbance on Millard Avenue, and they people heard yelling before the shots were fired.

Kevin O’Connell, the owner of O’Connell’s Corner bar here near the scene, said the suspect’s mother and grandmother were taken into his bar for safety.

“She was from that house correct, so when they had her outside, they didn’t want to leave her out in the cold, so they brought her in here… the mom… the grandma and the dog,” O’Connell said.

People in the area were surprised to see this happen in their community.

“This is always quiet this is a quiet neighborhood,” O’Connell said. “I don’t ever get activity like this.”

COPA is investigating the use of force while the officers involved will go on routine administrative leave.
