One man has died, and another is under police guard after a rooftop stand-off with police in Tamworth.
On Saturday afternoon, NSW Police found a 47-year-old resident with critical head injuries and a 55-year-old male relative armed with a knife at a house in the north-western NSW town.
The 55-year-old attempted to evade police by locking himself in a bedroom and then climbing onto the roof of the suburban home, still wielding the knife.
A dozen NSW Police officers surrounded the house and attempted to Taser the man on Saturday evening after he stabbed himself several times in the chest, threw roof tiles and pulled down a police ladder.
The man then fell to the ground after being chased across the rooftop by police. He was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital under police guard and is in a serious but stable condition.
The 47-year-old was taken to the same hospital with stab wounds and died on Saturday night.
A NSW police spokesperson said Oxley Police District detectives and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad were investigating the incident.
