First up, really pulling it in close, there’s Mercy Funk’s Lovefest 2025 ($22) over at Aviary at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, co-starring Dana Wylie and Kena Léon. For the annual traditional concert, the band is celebrating its sugary new single, Follow the Music.

On the actual big beating heart day Friday, well, buckle up.

Starting with the class acts, sadly Dave Babcock’s Soul Jazz on Valentine’s Day at Yardbird is already sold out, but Edmonton Opera has its posh Valentine’s Gala at 7 p.m. at Hotel Mac, including food and drinks and a Die Fledermaus theme ($550).

Grindstone Theatre, next up, is doing an ‘80s Prom Valentine’s Dance ($22.71) starting at 10:30 p.m. bouncing into the wee hours.

Down in the 9910 basement, Fleetwood MacDavid presents its Valentine’s Day Party ($16.72). Over at Starlite, Emo Night North has a night of new romantic spins for the Check Yes, Juliet party ($17.21), while Temple next door is having a more dance-oriented Lovers Ball with various skilled turntablists including UK’s LSB & DRS ($37.75).

And very down and dirty, Subspace Forbidden Masquerade Ball unzips at 9 p.m. Saturday at Starlite ($42.95) — 18+, dress code strictly enforced, and no photography!

All four of these events get started at 9 p.m. — when the night ends is more up to you.

If none of that is your cup of spicy tea and you just want to bust a gut, the live improv musical dynamos at 11 O’clock Number are doing a themed show at 7 p.m. Friday ($22.71).

Alone with your phone or with your mate or multiple mates, it’s going to be a lovely weekend — get your heart on!

The List is published online every Thursday. If you have events you’d like amplified or have any corrections or updates, please email fgriwkowsky@postmedia.com.
