Things I enjoy: Quick, easy tools that alleviate mundane processes. So while trying to find a way to eliminate meticulous editing of recent travel photos, I went on a hunt to find a tool that could batch edit my collection.
During that search, I found BeFunky, a digital platform known for its suite of creative tools, including photo editing, graphic design and collage making. Now, the company has put out artificial intelligence tools, too.
Originally launching in 2007, the digital platform from co-founders Tekin Tatar and Kemal Ozisikcilar isn’t a newcomer to the world of creative tools. In 2024, they launched their first AI-powered tool called Expand, which projects your photos beyond the frame, adding details itself. The platform also includes batch processing for editing photos, plus various tools to enhance, edit and contort your images.
Now if you’re wondering whether you should trust an AI-powered creative tool named “BeFunky,” I say (after testing it out) why not? Its name doesn’t sound sterile and rigid, as if creativity nurtures, rather than suppresses, our childlike nature. Yes, it screams “brand identity from the aughts,” but in our incredibly sleek and modernized technological landscape today, I find it refreshing.
How to use BeFunky
First, go to the BeFunky website and create an account. You can complete a few batch edits on BeFunky’s free trial, but for unlimited access to batch editing, it’s best to upgrade to a BeFunky Plus subscription for $7 to $15 per month.
Then, here’s how to navigate the BeFunky batch edit process:
- From the BeFunky homepage, open the batch photo editor by navigating to the Create menu and selecting Batch Photo Editor. Click the upload button (or open if you’re already in the Batch PhotoEditor). Then, select multiple photos from your computer — I haven’t found a maximum cutoff for batch editing, but I found it easiest to upload 100 images at a time.
- Now you can use BeFunky’s other AI-powered tool: You’ll see various editing options including an AI Image Enhancer for exposure, color and clarity and AI Background Remover, which removes backgrounds in one click. There’s also AI Portrait Retouch, which helps smooths skin and removes blemishes. You can tweak the settings of each AI tool for intensity and brush size, before mass-applying the edit to your batch of photos.
- To batch edit using all your settings, select all images and click the Apply button to process the selected AI tool. This may take a few moments to complete depending on the size of each image (and possibly upwards of 30 minutes if you’re on public internet, as I discovered). Be sure to comb through your photos for slight tweaks and any additional adjustments before you consider your batch complete.
- Before exporting and downloading, use the Resize and Rename features to ensure the smoothest transition between BeFunky and your desktop.
- Click the Export button found at the top-right corner of the Batch Editor screen. BeFunky has various format and quality settings for downloading.
Once complete, your images will be saved to a ZIP file in your computer’s default location. If you’d prefer to keep your edited images elsewhere, you can also integrate services like Google Drive or Dropbox for a direct transition between BeFunky and wherever you store your images.
A considerably simple process, BeFunky’s batch editing tool makes sense for multiple rounds of editing collections of images to achieve professional-quality results quickly.
Who should use BeFunky for batch editing?
With its longevity and accessibility, BeFunky is a great digital platform for hobbyists, small business owners, educators and students. The AI tools were built to bring ease to the creative process, which makes it worthwhile for someone looking to navigate photo editing without being in a creative industry.
I’d liken BeFunky to Canva, a great tool built to widen creativity’s accessibility (which also has an AI image generator feature) but probably better suited for those who likely don’t label themselves as a creative, at least not when first introducing themselves.
Now, that’s not to say BeFunky can’t be helpful if you are a full-time art director or digital artist — especially when in need of a quick background removal or one-click enhancement — but there’s better tools out there to fit the precision, speed and specific tools relied on for conceptual professional projects.
Essentially, it comes down to your reason for utilizing a batch editor. If ease of use and rapid output is what you’re seeking, try BeFunky for batch editing on its free trial. If you are seeking an incredibly robust comprehensive platform, BeFunky may work for you — in small doses. If you’re already familiar with batch editing on Adobe Lightroom, BeFunky probably isn’t your next photo editing upgrade.
