Sweden has asked whether it can use Italy’s migrant centres in Albania for deporting rejected permit applicants from Sweden, said Migration Minister Johan Forssell who met Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi in Rome on Wednesday to discuss Italy’s deal with Albania.
“If they are interested in it and are able to let more countries join, of course it could be of interest to Sweden,” Forssell told the TT newswire.
However, one year after Albania ratified the centres, which have been criticised by Italian opposition politicians as a colossal failure, they still stand empty and are subject to court hearings about which migrants can be sent to the centres.
In the meantime Italy is trying to repurpose them as repatriation hubs.
Once this happens, Sweden hopes to be able to benefit, said Forssell.
“But it depends on the Italian capacity, how many places they have, how many repatriation cases they have themselves and what might be free. We’re going to follow up,” he said, speaking to TT on the phone from Italy.

When to watch the solar eclipse in Sweden
On Saturday March 29th the moon will cover parts of the sun in a partial solar eclipse.
In Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway, about 20 to 40 percent of the sun will be covered, according to Nasa.
It will start at around 11.30am in Sweden, peak at around 12.30pm and be over in a couple of hours.
While not as spectacular as a total solar eclipse, it will take another 101 years before we get one of those in Sweden, so you may want to take the opportunity. Partial solar eclipses are not super common either – the last one could be seen in Sweden in October 2022.
Just make sure you have proper eye protection when watching the solar eclipse. Sunglasses are not enough.

Swedish police investigate Meta over fraudulent ads
Facebook and its owner, Meta, have been reported by the Swedish police for posting scam ads by networks of fraudsters, after Swedish investigative journalism programme Uppdrag granskning revealed that Facebook earns large sums from the fake ads.
The police investigation is labelled as “complicity in attempted gross fraud”.
In Uppdrag granskning’s programme, IT security expert Karl Emil Nikka showed that he reported all fake ads he saw on Facebook in December. Despite this, none of them were removed from the social media site.
Every year, Swedes lose billions of kronors to investment fraud.
