Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson: ‘It’s important that Iran does not get nuclear weapons’
The Swedish government is following events in Iran closely after the US’ attacks on its nuclear weapon programme, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said.
“For Sweden, it remains important that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons. It’s also important that the spiral of violence in the Middle East stops. De-escalation, restraint and a return to discussion and diplomacy are now of utmost importance. The government is in close dialogue with our partners and allies,” he wrote on X.

Two suspected drowned after boat capsizes in Fjällsjöälven
Two people are missing, suspected drowned, after a boat carrying four people capsized in the Fjällsjö river around 50 kilometres northwest of Sollefteå.
“One person made it to land and was awake and able to speak,” Tomas Näsman, the leader of the rescue efforts, told Tidningen Ångermanland.
Another person has been found, while two of the people who were on the boat are still missing.
The search began late on Sunday afternoon with boats and helicopters assisting. Rescue services said just after 9pm that their search was drawing to a close and handed over the case to the police.
“We’ve made the decision that it’s not possible to rescue them due to the water temperature and other factors,” on-duty officer from the rescue services Niklas von Essen told the newspaper. “This means that two people are still missing.”
Swedish vocabulary: kapsejsat ‒ capsized
Swedish firemen may soon be forced to shave their beards
New breathing masks may mean that Swedish firemen will have to be clean-shaven, P4 Jönköping reports, amid concerns that facial hair could stop the seal around the masks from making good contact with skin.
“Both us and our staff are concerned about how we are going to handle whether beards should be allowed or not,” Jerker Sturedahl, operative head of the fire services in Jönköping county, told the radio.
Checks are currently being carried out to make sure that the fire services’ breathing masks meet new, stricter, requirements from the Work Environment Authority.
A ban on facial hair could make it even more difficult for fire services to recruit part-time staff, Sturedahl said.
Swedish vocabulary: raka av skägget ‒ shave off the beard
Wet swimming gear can spread invasive species
During the summer, many Swedes head to the nearest lake to take a dip and cool off. Wet swimming costumes and swim toys risk spreading invasive species between lakes, P4 Uppland reports.
One example raised by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management is the zebra mussel, which originally comes from an area close to the Caspian sea, but which is classified as one of the world’s 100 most invasive species. In Skåne, the regional council has had to use potassium chloride to get rid of them.
Biologist Michael Diemer recommended that bathers empty their bags of wet swimming clothes, wash them and ensure they are fully dry before taking another dip.
Swedish vocabulary: vandrarmussla ‒ zebra mussel
