“Tracker Review: Justin Hartley’s CBS Procedural Balances Promise with Missed Opportunities”

Tracker, the new CBS procedural based on Jeffrey Deaver’s novel series, was initially titled “The Never Game.” However, it underwent a name change to “Tracker” shortly before its premiere. This change, while potentially confusing given the similarity to Amazon’s “Reacher,” aligns well with CBS’s penchant for producing episodic content.

Starring Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw, Tracker follows the story of a “rewardist” who utilizes his unique set of skills to track down missing persons and solve mysteries. With shades of Jack Reacher, Colter roams the Northwest in his rugged GMC truck, aided by his team of dispatchers and hacker, all while navigating encounters with various characters and facing challenges along the way.

While the premise of Tracker holds promise, the execution falls short in some areas. Despite Hartley’s solid performance, the series struggles to capitalize on his charisma and fails to delve deep into his character’s backstory. Additionally, the episodic storylines feel truncated and lack the depth needed to engage viewers fully.

One standout aspect of Tracker is its supporting cast, particularly Fiona Rene as attorney Reenie, whose chemistry with Hartley adds depth to the show. However, the limited interaction between Colter and his team members hampers the development of their relationships, missing an opportunity to enhance the series’ appeal.

Overall, Tracker offers a formulaic yet viable procedural format with potential for improvement. With its mix of action, mystery, and character dynamics, the series may find its footing as it progresses. However, at its current state, Tracker plays it safe and fails to stand out amidst the crowded landscape of TV procedurals.
