OTTAWA — U.S. President Donald Trump says he and Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed “on many things” during an “extremely productive” first call between both leaders with new American tariffs looming.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump also suggested that he thought Carney would win the ongoing federal election by saying that he would meet with the Liberal leader “immediately after” the campaign to continue negotiations.

“I just finished speaking with Prime Minister Mark Carney, of Canada,” Trump wrote just after 11 a.m. on Truth Social.

“It was an extremely productive call, we agree on many things, and will be meeting immediately after Canada’s upcoming Election to work on elements of Politics, Business, and all other factors, that will end up being great for both the United States of America and Canada. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he added.

The call comes just days before the latest 25 per cent tariffs levied by the U.S. on foreign-made vehicles and parts are set to kick in on April 2, dealing another blow to a major Canadian industry.

Trump also used Carney’s proper title — prime minister — as opposed to the derogatory title of “governor” he’d taken to use for former prime minister Justin Trudeau.

A Canadian readout of the call between both leaders was not immediately available.

More to come.
