US President Donald Trump is set to address Congress as the US pulls military aid from Ukraine. Our earlier stream is having technical difficulties. You can watch the address live below:
“The days of rule by unelected bureaucrats is over,” Trump says as he pledges to continue his administration’s campaign against federal spending.
Democrats continue to heckle and hold up signs.
Elon Musk was not elected and is responsible for one of the most powerful new programs created by Trump.
Trump seems as if he is prepared to double down on his trade war which has already enraged Canada and China.
“Whatever they tariff us, we tariff them. Whatever they tax us, we tax them,” Trump says.
Some Democrats are quietly chatting with each other as Trump delivers his remarks. Others are on their phones, AP reports.
The caucus is largely silent, save for periodic groans and chuckling throughout Trump’s speech. A contingent of lawmakers continue to hoist protest signs.
And wearing the word “Resist” printed on the backs of their shirts, a handful of Democrats exited the chamber.
Republicans are, by contrast, listening attentively to the president’s remarks and frequently cheering.
Trump praises the work of DOGE and its boss, Elon Musk.
“Perhaps you’ve heard of it,” Trump says of the controversial program.
When he name-checks Musk there are many cheers and some faint boos: “Thank you Elon, you’re working very hard. He didn’t need this.”
Trump says some of the programs that have been axed include work in Lesotho, a country, he says, “nobody has ever heard of”, and “making mice transgender”.
Trump says DOGE’s work has only just begun.
Trump is running through the actions of his government since he took office in January.
He takes credit for “swift and unrelenting action” in repositioning the nation’s economy.
Trump also runs through his actions to ban transgender girls and women from competing in female sports in elementary school through college.
“America is woke no more,” he says to cheers.
Congressman Al Green is standing up and heckling the president.
He is warned to take his seat but continues.
Speaker Mike Johnson then orders the removal of Green, a Democrat who has represented Texas for 20 years, from the chamber.
Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, who heckled Joe Biden at multiple State of the Union addresses, cheers as Green is escorted out of the chamber for his protest.
Trump resumes his speech.
Trump says he has achieved more in his time in office than any previous administration.
“We are just getting started,” he says.
“The American dream is surging bigger and better than ever before. The American dream is unstoppable and our country is on the verge of a comeback.”
Some spectators start to boo the president but they are drowned out by the enthusiastic cries of “USA, USA, USA”.
Donald Trump has arrived to address Congress to cheers, back slaps and hand shakes.
Shouts of “USA, USA, USA” are filling the chamber as he makes his way to the lectern to begin speaking.
