Vancouver council has backed a staff recommendation to hand out $15,000 to three animal welfare organizations in the city.

According to a report presented to council on Tuesday night, there were eight organizations that asked for a total of $74,000 under the Animal Welfare Grants program.

The City of Vancouver’s Animal Welfare Grant program provides financial aid to registered non-profit organizations that help shelter and care for animals outside the Vancouver Animal Services’ animal shelter.

The eight applicants were Paws for Hope Animal Foundation, Rabbitats Rescue Society, VOKRA, Atira Development Society, Community Builders, Elder Dog, Wild Hearts Horse Adoption and Circle F Horse Rescue Society.

The three successful applicants were Paws for Hope Animal Foundation, which will receive $10,423 to support marginalized dog owners, VOKRA will receive $2,610 for its ongoing spay/neuter program and Rabbitats Rescue Society will receive $2,000 for its spay/neuter and mapping/trapping programs.

Rabbitats Rescue Society was established in 2011 and operates a rabbit shelter and sanctuary in Richmond, two sanctuaries in South Surrey, a bunny café adoption centre in East Vancouver and several micro-sanctuaries throughout the lower mainland.

VOKRA is a volunteer run charity cat/kitten rescue serving Vancouver and other surrounding municipalities in the Lower Mainland.

Paws for Hope’s focus is on supporting low income or homeless animal owners.
