A 19-year-old man has been charged over a random stabbing attack in Northbridge overnight.

WA Police allege the teenager approached a man aged in his 40s who was sleeping on a ramp outside a building on Lake Street around midnight.

He’s accused of assaulting the man, who was a stranger to him, with a steak knife before fleeing the area.

The victim was taken to Royal Perth Hospital with stab wounds to his neck and head.

The teen, from Wellard, was found five hours later at Murdoch Train Station and charged with attempted murder.

He is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court this morning.

Two Perth outer suburbs are leading the nation for the number of homes built so far under a $10 billion federal affordable housing scheme.

The Housing Australia Future Fund aims to build thousands of affordable homes in the nation’s capital cities and regional centres, however the Coalition has signalled it will end the program if it wins office at the upcoming election.

Supporters of the fund say it should be expanded rather than shut down, with figures released today showing 358 homes had been completed and another 5465 are under construction while planning is under way for 7833.

The WA suburbs of Ellenbrook and Banksia Grove make up nearly half of the homes already built.

Meanwhile, construction has also been earmarked for a further 345 properties across Scarborough, Mount Lawley, Perth, Victoria Park, Midland and Fremantle.

More than $100,000 has been raised for the Uber driver critically injured when Perth obstetrician Rhys Bellinge allegedly crashed his Jaguar into his car while speeding and drunk in Dalkeith earlier this month.

Muhammad Usman, 25, was in a coma for days after the incident after suffering two broken legs, and a broken arm. He remains in hospital with his injuries requiring several surgeries.

His passenger, Elizabeth Pearce, 24, died.

Usman, who is a recent civil engineer graduate, is from Pakistan and has no family in Perth.

He said he was facing a long and challenging road to recovery to rebuild his life.

“As the eldest sibling in my family, a lot depended on me,” he said on a GoFundMe page, which has raised more than $100,000 in less than 24 hours.

“I had a bright future ahead, with a job interview scheduled for the Monday following the accident. Tragically, this opportunity was taken away from me in an instant.

“In this time of immense hardship, I am reaching out for your support to help me and my family cover long-term family support, daily living costs, and other financial burdens.

“Additionally, I am trying to bring my parents or at least one of them to Australia to provide the emotional support I desperately need during this difficult time, as I do not have any family in Australia.”

Usman described Pearce as a pure soul. It’s understood she had just entered his car to commence her Uber journey when the crash occurred on Birdwood Parade around 10pm on February 15.

Bellinge has been charged with manslaughter and dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.

It’s alleged he was speeding up to 130km/h in a 50 zone, and nearly four times the limit when the crash occurred.

He later told police his vision was blurry because he was crying over his recent separation from his wife.

Good morning readers, and welcome to our live news blog for Wednesday, February 26.

Making headlines today, the City of Perth council has ditched the advice of planning officers to allow mining magnate Gina Rinehart to wrap her empire’s headquarters in company advertising, but rejected fellow billionaire Andrew Forrest’s bid to do the same.

And sticking with the council, last night it abolished its free nighttime parking incentive and upped the cost of parking in the city during the day, amid rising operational costs and the closure of two major car parks.

Meanwhile, there’s been a less-than-warm reception to an election pledge regarding a major Perth beach.

You see, over the weekend WA Labor promised to set up a free ‘Surf CAT’ bus running from Stirling Train Station to Scarborough Beach in a bid to connect more residents to the coast, if re-elected next month. Gnarly, dude!

But about 40 kilometres down the coast, in rapidly growing southern suburbs that fall within Premier Roger Cook’s own electorate, things aren’t so swell.

On the same day the Surf CAT promise was made, residents in Aubin Grove, Mandogalup and Hammond Park protested the lack of public transport in their area, warning that school students were crossing treacherous roads to get to class due to a dearth of pedestrian paths and a lack of public transport.

And, there’s an update on the horrible story dubbed “every parents’ worst nightmare” when it landed in court.

A young girl who was lured from a Doubleview park and assaulted by a paedophile has been awarded $75,000 in compensation, with the impact the offending had laid bare in court documents released this month.
