There are still two WA seats yet to be called from Saturday’s federal election – Bullwinkel and Fremantle.

WA’s newest seat, Bullwinkel, was expected to be a tight three-way contest between the Liberals, Labor and The Nationals, and it is proving to be so.

Just 85 votes separate Labor’s Trish Cook (44,311) and the Liberals’ Matt Moran (44,226).

The Australian Electoral Commission has abandoned its preference count as the Nationals candidate, Mia Davies, could in theory still pass Moran during the distribution of preferences.

The seat remains in doubt, with 75 per cent of the vote counted.

Meanwhile, in Fremantle, independent Kate Hulett (45,313) leads sitting Labor MP Josh Wilson (44,117) by just 196 votes, with nearly 80 per cent of the vote counted.

In case you missed it, Sunday saw International Firefighters’ Day commemorated in Perth with a special service held at Kings Park.

There were 100 West Australian firefighters who have given their lives in duty honoured at the service and this year six firefighters were added to the Honour Roll at the Firefighters’ Memorial Grove in the park.

One of those remembered on Sunday was Harry Stead, a 20-year-old volunteer who tragically died fighting a bushfire near Esperance in late 2023.

“Western Australians are immensely proud of their emergency services personnel who come to our aid when we’re in danger,” Emergency Services Minister Paul Papalia said.

“On International Firefighters’ Day we take the opportunity to reflect on the brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our State safe.”

After Labor’s convincing win at Saturday’s federal election, here’s what’s making national and internation headlines today:

Good morning and welcome to our live blog for Monday, May 5.

Making headlines today, Senator Michaelia Cash says WA MP Andrew Hastie is a future leader of the Liberal Party but that it was ultimately up to him whether he wanted to put his hand up.

As the dust settles on the Coalition’s extraordinary election defeat, the party will need to elect a new leader following its former leader Peter Dutton’s defeat in his own seat of Dickson.

Meanwhile, planning documents show former lord mayor Basil Zempilas’ move to drop a 120-year-old home from a City of Perth heritage survey is a key justification in billionaire Gina Rinehart’s bid to demolish the property.

The development application, lodged by consultants for Rinehart’s family empire Hancock Prospecting, seeks approval to clear three office buildings and the Federation-style home at 27 Outram Street to make way for a $250 million multi-use development.

And a West Australian teacher has claimed the state’s education system has failed him at one of the most vulnerable points of his life, impacting not only his career but needlessly sacrificing a good teacher with decades of experience – and he says he is not the only one.

For something a little lighter, it was revealed last week A24 had won a bidding war for the film adapting Winton’s Booker Prize-shortlisted novel and starring Brad Pitt. Here’s what Winton thinks.
