Alberta Health Services (AHS) said Thursday that a measles case in the Foremost area has been confirmed and that people who visited three Lethbridge businesses in late March might have been exposed.

On March 28, the person who tested positive for measles went to three south Lethbridge businesses — Costco, Real Canadian Superstore and Boston Pizza. The estimated exposure time periods were from 4:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at the Costco, 5:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. at the Real Canadian Superstore and 6:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Boston Pizza.

“Anyone who attended these locations at these times who was born in or after 1970 and has less than two documented doses of measles-containing vaccine is at risk for developing measles and is strongly encouraged to review their immunization records and monitor themselves for symptoms of measles,” said AHS.

What symptoms to look for if you suspect measles exposure

Measles, a highly contagious disease, spreads easily through the air, says AHS. Symptoms include a fever of 38.3 C or higher, a cough, runny nose and/or red eyes, and a rash that appears three to seven days after the fever starts. The rash usually beginning behind the ears and on the face, and spreads down to the body and then to the arms and legs, it says.

AHS advises anyone who develops symptoms to stay home and call Health Link at 811 before visiting a health-care facility or provider.
