What to Know
After three games on the road, Western Kentucky is heading back home. They and the Jax. State Gamecocks will face off in a Conference USA battle at 8:00 p.m. ET on Thursday at E.A. Diddle Arena. The Hilltoppers are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 79 points per game this season.
The experts predicted Western Kentucky would be headed in after a victory, but FIU made sure that didn’t happen. Western Kentucky fell victim to a painful 85-66 loss at the hands of FIU on Saturday. The Hilltoppers were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 52-29.
Despite the defeat, Western Kentucky had strong showings from Julius Thedford, who went 7 for 12 en route to 18 points plus two steals, and Jalen Jackson, who scored six points along with six steals. Jackson had some trouble finding his footing against Liberty on Thursday, so this was a step in the right direction.
Meanwhile, Jax. State lost a heartbreaker to Kennesaw State when they met back in February of 2023, and they left with a heavy heart again on Saturday. Jax. State took an 83-71 hit to the loss column at the hands of Kennesaw State. The over/under was set at 154.5 points, so nice work oddsmakers; you were right on the money.
The loss doesn’t tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Marcellus Brigham Jr., who earned 15 points in addition to six rebounds. Jaron Pierre Jr. was another key player, earning 20 points.
Western Kentucky’s loss dropped their record down to 10-5. As for Jax. State, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-6.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as both are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Western Kentucky hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 79 points per game. However, it’s not like Jax. State struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 80.8. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Western Kentucky was able to grind out a solid win over Jax. State in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, winning 70-59. Does Western Kentucky have another victory up their sleeve, or will Jax. State turn the tables on them? We’ll have the answer soon enough.
