The French phenom etched his name in the history books, becoming the first rookie since Shaquille O’Neal in 1993 to achieve a 40-point, 20-rebound double-double. Wembanyama even sank a clutch three-pointer in overtime to seal the win for the Spurs.

“I’ve never seen so much greatness before,” Wembanyama remarked when asked about facing Brunson. “I’ve just witnessed so much greatness and I want to be a part of it. I always wanted to, but more and more, seeing that I’m already able to compete with those guys. I’m not there yet, but I’m on the right path. I know it and I’m going to get there one day soon.”

Despite his valiant effort, Brunson fell just one point shy of the Knicks’ single-game scoring record held by Carmelo Anthony since 2014. While the scoring record remained elusive, Brunson’s performance undoubtedly deserves recognition.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich acknowledged Brunson’s talent, calling him “amazing.” However, he reserved his highest praise for Wembanyama’s development: “It just shows what he’s going to be when he understands all the physicality that’s coming at him. Fortunately, he’s also a hell of an instinctive passer… so he’s pretty special.”

The Spurs held a comfortable 17-point lead at halftime, but the Knicks clawed their way back, closing the gap to just three points by the end of the third quarter. New York even managed to take the lead before Wembanyama’s clutch free throws forced overtime. Ultimately, the Spurs held on for the victory.
