A woman has been bitten by a shark and pulled onto shore by onlookers at Bundeena in Sydney’s south.
Ambulances were called to Gunyah Beach after 1pm on Friday after the woman in her 30s was attacked. The victim is believed to be a local woman and the incident has left the tiny community in shock.
The woman was treated at the scene for serious leg injuries before being airlifted to hospital where her condition remains unknown.
Onlookers at Gunyah Beach said they heard screams, and quickly jumped into the water and applied pressure to her wounds.
Multiple helicopters have begun to circle the area searching for the shark.
Gunyah, one of four beaches in Bundeena, is known as the “locals’ beach”. Residents in the area say they had not known of a shark attack in the past 25 years.
