Woman, child critically injured in multi-vehicle Mississauga crash

A woman and a child have been critically injured following a multi-vehicle crash in Mississauga on Thursday.

The crash involving a black Range Rover and red Honda Civic occurred just after 4 p.m. at Ninth Line and Erin Centre Boulevard.

Peel police say the incident originally began as a reported carjacking some four kilometres away at Life Time Fitness near Highway 403 and Winston Churchill Boulevard just before 4 p.m.

“We have since determined that the two incidents are related and have been able to rule out that a carjacking took place,” explained Cst. Tyler Bell in an update on Thursday night.

“What we believe to have taken place so far is that some sort of interaction happened with the occupants of the black Range Rover and one, or possibly more, vehicles at that gym location.”

Bell added that there are unconfirmed reports that a firearm was involved in the incident at the gym.

Bell says the Range Rover fled the scene at the gym and was likely pursued by one or more vehicles at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred on Ninth Line.

Paramedics initially told CityNews an adult woman and three children between the ages of 9 and 11 were taken to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries while a fourth child was in serious condition.

Bell said three children are now in stable condition, while the woman and one child remain in critical condition.

Bell also confirmed that two of the children injured are related to the woman, while the other two are friends of the children.

Police say two young people fled the scene of the crash on foot, but no descriptions were immediately available other than one was wearing all black clothing while the other was last seen wearing a white shirt and black pants.

“The vehicle is not on file as stolen,” said Bell. “That doesn’t mean it wasn’t stolen; it is certainly possible that this vehicle has been stolen and not yet reported. That is something we’re looking into.”
