WASHINGTON — WWE has announced plans to acquire longtime Mexican lucha libre promotion AAA, teaming up with Mexico-based holding company Fillip to make the deal happen.

The announcement was made during the WrestleMania 41 Saturday Countdown show in Las Vegas. WWE’s Chief Content Officer, Paul “Triple H” Levesque, appeared alongside Fillip Chairman Alberto Fasja, as well as AAA’s Marisela Peña and Dorian Roldán Peña. Rey Mysterio and El Hijo Del Vikingo were among the talent that joined them onstage.

AAA has been a major player in lucha libre wrestling since it was founded in 1992 by Antonio Peña. It has stayed a family organization ever since it began and has helped launch the careers of stars like Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio and Penta. The Peña family will stay involved in AAA moving forward, working alongside WWE and Fillip.

As part of the new partnership, a crossover event called Worlds Collide is set for June 7 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. The event will feature talent from both WWE and AAA.

“AAA has a rich cultural heritage with some of the most passionate fans in the world and it’s an honor to work with the Peña family to embark on this journey,” Levesque said. “By bringing together WWE’s global capabilities and AAA’s amazing tradition, we look forward to an exciting future filled with new opportunities.”

“AAA has been a family-operated promotion for over three decades and our trust could not be better placed than with one of the biggest sports entertainment businesses in the world,” AAA General Manager Dorian Roldán Peña added.

The deal is officially expected to close later this year.
