Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy is among the Republican members of the Senate Finance Committee scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump on Thursday at the White House as negotiations continue on a passing a budget by Friday to avoid a partial government shutdown.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson of Shreveport was able to narrowly move the House version of Trump’s budget across the finish line Tuesday, but senators — both Republicans and Democrats — remain far apart on the measure to fund government through September.

On Wednesday, Trump invited Cassidy and the other GOP members to the White House Thursday in an attempt to find a path to a final deal.

In a statement, Cassidy said he supports the president’s agenda.

“Both President Trump and Senate Republicans want to keep taxes low, reduce inflation and grow our economy,” Cassidy said. “I’m looking forward to discussing fiscally responsible ways to do that. I support the president’s agenda and will work to accomplish it.”

Johnson did his part by convincing all but one Republican to advance the House version of the budget.

“We did our job today,” Johnson said Tuesday moments after the vote.
