At his Oct. 16 “tougher on crime” announcement, PM Mark Carney was asked what he would do if the Supreme Court (SC) struck down any of his toughened measures. His reply was, “Follow the law.” In other words, he does not believe in the supremacy of Parliament; that it is the elected MPs who determine the law of the land.

It is not the place of the courts to change the intent or decisions of democratically elected parliamentarians. If the courts feel a law infringes on the charter, it’s up to the government to adopt such amendments as required to make the law compliant. It is not the government’s place to throw up its hands in surrender to such court decisions.
Carney said further he believes in the rule of law. Well, he is the head lawmaker. Conceding so readily to the SC sounds more like “the rule of judiciary”. I cannot find anywhere in our constitution the sections that say judges pass or determine laws.

NICKLES AND DIMES
I recently received an email from the city advising a change to how our property taxes will be processed. Starting Jan. 1, 2026 a charge of $0.55 will be added to those accounts that have the taxes paid monthly by way of an automatic debit.
I always thought this time would come. Didn’t expect it to be so soon. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are finally being nickeled and dimed to death.

BRING IT HOME
Hallelujah! Mail delivery is back. A magazine subscription, the newsletter from my parents’ home village, new dog tags, a cheque, an invite to upcoming events. And back to looking forward to the click of the mail slot and the friendly wave of the mailman.
It makes such a difference. Living alone, he may be the only human contact of the day. Like my Sun subscription, delivery makes all the difference.
