DENTON, Texas — Cleanup and construction have officially begun on the Fine Arts Theatre in Denton, the historic theater the City of Denton says will reopen by spring next year.

This commenced a year after the Denton City Council first approved an economic development incentive agreement allotting $1.6 million to the site.

The building first opened in 1877 as a local opera house before opening as part of a chain of Texas theaters in 1935. It wasn’t until 1957 that the theater adopted its “Fine Arts” moniker. But, a fire forced the theater to close in 1982.

“By the spring of 2026, it will reclaim its place as a cultural center in our community,” the city said in a Facebook post. “We’re so excited to be a part of the theater’s next era, and for the historic building to become a vibrant community hub in our beloved downtown square once again.”

The restoration is being led by local developers Alex Payne and Brad Andrus with Fine Arts Theatre LLC.

The theater will feature three theatres: a main theatre, a smaller theatre with a bar on the second floor overlooking the square, and a private theatre on the third floor. The first floor will also have its own bar and concession stand.
